the network manager takes anything between 30 seconds and a minute.

Seeing identical behavior running Xubuntu 12.10 & 13.04 on an IBM
Thinkpad T60. Scaling mode quit working when updating to kernel
3.5.0-27 on 12.10 and continues to not work on 13.04. Default
resolution for this panel is 1024x768; switching to either 800x600 or
640x480 results in a window of that
Commands & results:
$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"
Appears to have no affect.
$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --set PANEL_FITTING full_aspect
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)

I also have a similar problem on Ubuntu 13.04 with latest kernel
3.8.0-19-generic. My problem can be considered as crital since when I
enable broadcom proprietry wireless driver, ubuntu freezes on boot.
Below is the kernel log just before the freeze:
