I used Synaptic and removed the FGLRX. That left the drivers for the ATI Cedar.
A cold boot restart and the overlay error message at the bottom right of the
screen was gone.
Everything on the desktop seems to be working just fine.

I get sound, and everything works great except switching outputs. I'd like to
switch between outputs (between the headset and speakers).

I have been trying to get Ubuntu 12.10 working on my computer, but have
run into nothing but problems. (I need a Linux system to work in konsole

Is there any reason *not* to include the workaround in comment 8, by
default, in Software Center? It seems like that config shouldn't break
anything, if I understand correctly, and it would prevent issues which
