Sorry my last post was a bit vague as to the triggers for the
bottlenecks.
To follow up my last entry:
the get_mset() calls are actually made in _get_estimate_nr_apps_and_nr_pkgs
which is called from _blocking_perform_search()
These are Triggered by _build_homepage_view in
softwarecenter/ui/gtk

I'm having the same issue in 12.10. I just noticed it two days ago.
I did quite a bit of updating from software center
Updated some Tweaks stuff and other programs.
Even added Htop hoping to catch something but all I caught was more freezes.
Today ..it happened about 5 - 7 times. I've worked about
Needs to be fixed in quantal (or at least in quantal-proposed) before it
can go into precise-proposed. Rejecting the precise-proposed upload for
now.

Sorry, I'd already replied to netdev but found out later it didn't make
it. Resending what I sent netdev but did not reach there.
Basically I'm not seeing a problem with the 57780 with either RedHat or
Ubuntu.
So I'm not sure what it could be the problem in your case.
