I got around the problem by using initrd and vmlinuz extracted from the
iso, booting off it and then finally during the installation process
manually mounting the iso to /dev/cdrom. Finally I was able to installed
ubuntu 12.04 LTS!

I found this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/65852/cannot-login-to-
my-user-account which suggested removing ~/.Xauthority file. I did this
and was able to log in without problem.
