The flickering appeared only after I installed 12.04 beta 1, so I think the
BIOS is broken warning is unrelated.
Also when I connect an external monitor to the VGA port, the flickering
disappears completely. It seems to me that this is a problem of graphics

I tried 'manual selection' on my most recent attempt to tackle this,

Do you mean 1) the volume up/down hotkeys failed to work after
suspend/resume; & 2) the volume up/down hotkeys got back to work after
you ran vlc? Please correct me if I understand wrongly.

A workaround to avoid this problem should be:
Run ccsm, and in the OpenGL section disable "Sync To VBlank".
If you do this just before leaving your computer for the night (and
assuming my theory is right), then that should avoid the bug.

Thanks kayandus, that valgrind output is intriguing.
It would appear the two leaks are the result of a blockage in compiz
event loop. I am guessing that after many hours, maybe your monitor has
gone to sleep. And that is causing PrivateGLScreen::waitForVideoSync to
hang inside either glXGetVideoSy
I suggest that this be pushed out to the non-proposed repository.
This is the kind of bug that pushes users back to the mainstream in
droves.

Yes, looks like it is caused by IDE CD - I tried to access it after a
successful boot and the system immediately froze - not even a mouse was
stirring. After I disabled IDE controller system booted normally.

It turns out that it's not a complete lock up, but that there is no refresh
happening, even though the system keeps running.
More details on the symptoms:
* screen freezes (all/any open windows stay completely unchanged)
* The mouse pointer still moves
* With the screen unchanged, the mouse point
