I experimented this bug not long ago - right now, Im not sure it is exactly the
same, since it's not really random but it happens everytime I run Supertux.
I recovered the folloving kernel log lines rebooting from another partition
after the freeze.

(thanks to ColdFeetBob for pointing it out)
Modify* /xserver/mi/mieq.c and rebuild xserver
* Increase the "#define QUEUE_SIZE 512" to 1024, 2048 or 4096 [1]
Note that this is *not* a proper fix as you can see in the discussion

By clicking through the error message several time the installer started
and now I'm a happy camper as Ubuntu 11.04 is installed and running. I
updated to 11.10 and found that it is not user friendly for me. I
un-installed the 11.10 version and re-installed 11.04 which is clear, clean
and works v

Maybe its a permissions problem. Try running update-manager like this:
gksu update-manager
See if it operates correctly when you try to remove the unwanted PPA.

Just fyi, I can duplicate this bug on my Dell desktop with NVIDIA, in
both Unity and Unity 2D, but it does NOT happen (can not be duplicated)
on my Gateway laptop with ATI video card. Both are 64 bit installs
