Purged network-manager and all packages depending on it, rebooted, and
the serial devices seem fine now without the reloading of usbserial. I
can't use it properly in Kubuntu anyway, so bye bye it goes. I was

I have since deleted the offending file, forced a verify and all is well
so far. Nautilus showed a padlock indicating that the permissions were
wrong - how would that happen?
Unfortunately, in my enthusiasm in locating the probably cause of the
fault, I deleted it without checking the permissions.

For sound menu registration to work you need to have a
'/usr/share/applications/exaile.desktop' file, that's the only thing I
can think of that you might be missing. If you install exaile form the

The network-manager + network-manager-gnome hypothesis may not be true.
I encountered this problem with Kubuntu 10.10, which doesn't have the
network-manager-gnome package installed. LiveCD test is enough.
How I did the test:

via efi. I ended up using http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current
/natty-desktop-amd64.iso, which now boots to the grub menu. It starts
out with an "error: prefix is not set.", but later loads the menu.

I have never noticed this issue before but now it shows on Ubuntu
Maverick 64bit, the memory usage of both the Indicator applet and NM-
applet seems to get extremely high.
At points the two applets are consuming 1-1.5Gb.
