Still having very high CPU usage when recording in Audacity, Jokosher,
Sound Recorder not as high as the others but at least 45% CPU usage in
Sound Recorder and 100% CPU usage in the other recording software. The
system becomes unresponsive, Animations drop to about 1 frame/3 seconds.

Without testing it at all in Ubuntu, this sounds like the libedit bug
(which I don't know how/why somebody at Ubuntu assumed it was fixed).
Calling php from a compgen script work fine in Debian, another
indication that it might be the libedit bug.

This has been fixed upstream, 0.7 is released. 0.7-2 is available in
Debian too.
I'll ask for a sync, this is a bug fix release.

This is now implemented in the version in Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). The
conversions currently have to be typed by hand (e.g. "1cm in inches")
but a GUI version is planned for later releases. Thanks for your bug

After waiting for a couple of days and unsuccessfully pinging mvo a
couple of times for further triage I went ahead and updated the system
with aptitude about 2 weeks ago. As such, I can now only provide
information post-update.
