I've had this problem too, but it has been solved. Perhaps you have the
same problem I did.
Is your screensaver on? If it is, TURN IT OFF. Even if you select
"blank screen", it turns on the backlight. So, give this a try:
1. turn OFF the screensaver

I will bump this. I also think that it is not even convenient when we
use the "normal" mouse wheel. To look on every desktop a window free
area to use it, is much more a pain in the ars*. it's much more simple
to simply use arrow.

I had the same problem on Hardy.
Then I removed jackd was giving error so I used
synaptic. And changed Audacity playback to OSS and recording to ALSA. It works
now.

and the LVDS problem is still not resolved. VGA output works great, but
the LVDS only works in vesa mode (fairly useless for me).

You are correct. The moment I stopped Apparmor the daemon loaded and
clamdrib now works. I reloaded apparmor and it continues to work, I am
thinking load order is an issue. I will try a reboot.

Thanks for your help. I think I've figured out. Disabling MediaWrap can solve
the problem, and when visiting pages mentioned with MediaWrap enabled, Firefox
will call mplayer, which leads to seemingly irresponsive (maybe respond but

Same problem again occurs with 8.10 rc Intrepid release candidate.
Lots of files persistently fail to install with apt-get complaining
about "Hash Sum mismatch". Some package lists fail also, with the same
error reported.
Observation: This problem seems to afflict larger files in particular.

If you've installed svn from hardy-backports, it's incompatilbe with the
released version of hg. We just got a compatible hg backported in the
last day or two, so if you update, then that should solve it.

I was able to get the installation to complete with the Wacom tablet
removed. However, I did see the screen start to blank and hit a button
to get it back. The installation finished and prompted me to restart.
At this point, I removed the CD and rebooted, and was greeted with the
new Intrepid log

Brian's FIX worked for me. My wifi wouldn't connect after
suspend/resume. Running freshly installed Ubuntu 8.10 RC on a thinkpad
t42p with the Atheros 5212 wireless chip.
Three things that I did were
1. added MODULES="ath_hal" to /etc/defaults/acpi-support (not sure if this is
significant)
2. ad
hidd is there after isntalling the bluez-compat package, but it now
fails to connect. The message returned when attempting to connect to the
keyboard is "Can't get device information: Function not implemented"
