I have exactly the same problem with both of the Nvidia 169.12 and

Well, I found a solution for the problem. You just have to recompile the
alsa modules (here the problem seems to come from alsa). Let me add that
this kinf of problem doesn't exist on fedora 9. This what I did :
sudo apt-get install module-assistant

i tried this but when i restarted it i got no sound and it froze every time i
tried to log in

Not having ALSA support is incredibly annoying to those of us who installed
libsnack solely to get sound on aMSN, and got none.
Meanwhile, if you're really desperate, you could always install from source.
Simply adding --enable-alsa to the ./configure parameters will enable ALSA
support.
