I am now experiencing this same problem. Its weird though cause it just
started happening. The Login screen will come up and it accepts the user
name and password that i put it. The login screen transitions to the
brownish screen and then just hangs there. I can restart X by Zapping
it.

I am also experiencing this bug in kpdf and acroread, with a variety of
pdf documents on two printers connected to a box with a 64-bit install
of Kubuntu Gutsy. I don't seem to remember this problem occurring in
Feisty, but I could be wrong based on what I read on this page.

The way around the choppy video is to switch the video player to using
X11 video instead of XVideo. Apparently this is only a problem when
using compiz. X11 is somewhat lower quality in my experience, but it's a
usable workaround for now.

getting sound in Search and Rescue. Here's what I'm getting on
installation of yiff-server:

Before this is accepted, please look at the work directory changes and
decide whether the "Auto create work directories" changes that were done
in the previous ubuntu merge are wrong. IE, should it be auto-created if
/var/lib exists instead of /var/run? I think so but I want a second
opinion before

Ubuntu better. If I understand, you are trying to update thunderbird
with the built-in thunderbird updater? This is deactivated in Ubuntu,
the updates come trough Update Manager. The current version of
Thunderbird in Gutsy's repos

I installed the latest pidgin version 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 in Linux Ubuntu
Gutsy and I can't reproduce this problem. Can you also test this version
and confirm if you still have that issue?
