Yes I agree I spoke too soon in saying it was a duplicate, which is why

I personally have the VIA 8137. It works out of the box, but there are
still issues. This soundcard actually lacks a master-volume, their
windows-driver simulates a virtual one I guess.

I reproduced this with sudo X -config ... to load a vanilla config
file, that doesn't do any multiseat or even multihead stuff. It also
doesn't have the int10 module commented or anything. Nor does it have
the "omit xfree86-dga" option!

And you are right, this is what occurs.
Splash-screen thingie is a dependency of gnome-art .. but it removes
both unless you mark it as well.
So a temporary work around would be to select the splash-screen-selector

Some of the pdfs do work but some, like mathexample.pdf do not. It

When I say sound "doesn't work." I mean that no sound comes out of the
laptop speakers, although ubuntu seems to have no idea that sound isn't

Have difficulties in starting up applications in my preferred user-interface
(KDE). For ex. KTorrent runs in KDE but I cannot interact with it. If I startup
Gnome my Kmail doesn't show but KTorrent runs at it

When playing movies, mplayer doesn't play well the sound in almost all
files.
In certain formats (as .asf) it seems that there's no problem.
In edgy all worked properly. It's not a fault of my sound system since all apps
