What are your suggestions for correcting the above 2 problems? I think
if VLC media player and the ubuntu-restricted-extras package were pre
installed, then the second problem would dissappear. The first would

I have problems with installing ttf-mscorefonts-installer as well. The
program connects to sourceforge to download the required files, but
just does not get an answer. I just chose to uninstall the
ttf-mscorefonts-installer. Then everything was fine. The main problem,
imo is in the nchc.dl.sourceforge.net mirror.

ubuntu-restricted-extras from synaptic. That contains everything you
need, in one package.

Go to Settings-->Repositories in Synaptic. There, choose another
mirror. I suggest choosing one in singapore or france. Then click
"Reload", and everything will work fine. However, I think that your
error has been resolved by now, because it seems like a server
configuration mistake.
