It's possible to write a wrapper around Putty. FileZilla source
code shows how to do that, they use Putty for their SFTP support.

I may also suggest http://www.stunnel.org/ for wrapping any kind of
non-SSL traffic into SSL.

I think most users use only one personnality. And those using many have
probably enough knowledges to build the additional packages they need.
Note: Personnaly I almost never use the standards packages because I always
create a package for each group of application having only the components
