/etc/profile (not sure if related, will try to reproduce)
...and no pointer. Hit the laptop-shortcut to enable/disable touchpad...it did
not come back. Plugged usb mouse in...still did not come back, but I
*I was able to right click and after a minute or two, the pointer
reappeared. There is a separate issue where the screen brightness
buttons do not work for a minute or two after boot...it seems like when
the screen brightness buttons worked, that's when the pointer became not
invisible.

If anything it's gotten worse: it used to be on restart, if the drive
was plugged in, it would be detected whereas if I plugged it in it would
not, now even on restart it's not detected. Mounting manually works
just fine.

is reproducible from a working system if you follow the above steps, and
then open libreoffice-calc and then attempt to start typing with the
