One further historical detail: when these machines were running 14.04.3
and we made the mistake of accepting the HardWare Enablement (HWE)
upgrade:

which replaced the old fglrx driver with the radeon one, that's when we
first encountered this unable-to-unblank
Wow, this is a blast from the past. That bug was probably one or two
machines ago and I no longer have the hardware to test / reproduce it.

Yes packaged version in main archive, using Ubuntu Mate 17.10 now and
its still not showing the photos mount in Caja (like nautilus). I can
see the Documents mount though.
