This is part of the fail to update issue and came after attempting to
run sudo apt-get upgrade

1. I forgot to mention that this problem started after I had been away
for all of May and launched an update on my return.
2 After a couple of reboots, Update now seems to be working correctly.

Sorry, I've been away from the computer for a while. Hope this helps.
Incidentally, running Software updater now responds "Failed to download
repository information - Check your internet connection" Internet is
fine immediately before and after each attempt.

Hi Seth
My problem with the half installed package appears to have been resolved
with the "sudo apt-get install --reinstall" process. Updates are now
installing correctly as far as I can see.

I think the duplicate is assigned incorrectly as this ticket is
specifically about gtk2, and that one is gtk3.
