True, the upgrade completed successfully but without DNS which is
reasonable because I don't think that a user needs a network connection
after the files were downloaded. But I experience Wi-Fi disconnects once
in a while.

had my XPS since October 2017 and am currently running Ubuntu 18.04.3.
No issues until last week. I think I may have selected "headset with
microphone" by accident once when inserting headphones without a
microphone, but no evi
I *think* what we want from upstream is for module-switch-on-connect to
ignore new connections which are detected around the same time as the
daemon starting. Because those are not user-initiated but more likely
just a side-effect of logging in.

I have tested this on the live system of Ubuntu MATE
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/20191010/eoan-desktop-amd64.iso).
Here we have only `mawk` package pre-installed. Such a system does not have
`gawk` installed.
Aptitude says that `mawk` was installed because of `ubuntu
python3-defaults (3.7.5-1) unstable; urgency=medium
* Bump version to 3.7.5.
* Bump standards version.

Ubuntu discontinued the use of /etc/network/interfaces a number of
releases ago and in 19.10 have removed ifupdown. Please see the
migrating to netplan document:

If you need to continue using /etc/network/interfaces then there are
ways to install ifupdow

Could you please carefully describe why was it working on 19.04?
I see `mawk` installed on Ubuntu MATE 19.04. And bash-completion for `umount`
works here without problems.
