I think I've hit this with most/all cosmic desktop installs for the past
few months.
My uncertainty only comes from the fact that you won't hit the bug
until/unless the system needs to update snapd after that. So maybe a
good test is to start with a cosmic image that is older than the last

I tried backporting the upstream fix that came up in our discussion.
It fixes the crash back to how it was in Xenial (no segfault).
There still won't be much reason to run in non-VMWare envoronments, but this
isn't what this was about.

Same issue here on T570 running Manjaro, this is the only bug report talking
about the problem which seems not related to Ubuntu but to alsa. All sliders
are up in alsamixer, sound is around half-volume compared to the Windows
install. ALSA Driver Version: k4.14.67-1-MANJARO.

More to the point, implementing this would give snaps the ability to add
fine-grained network permissions for plugs, and this would suddenly make
snaps a very attractive alternative to Docker images for server apps. I
think this should be considered for priority.

No disagreement that this is a high priority item. There is some work
around fine grained mediation happening but I am unsure when it will
land.
The problem is that this is not the only high priority item that needs
to be addressed. Changing priority of these items can certainly be
discussed again
