Confirmed, but:
1. Your explanation was difficult to understand so per comment #2 next
time please attach a screenshot of the problem; and
2. In Gnome Shell (Ubuntu 17.10+) those navigation buttons don't exist.

Stuck on a black screen after logging out of Gnome Shell.
Logging in via ssh shows gnome-shell is no longer running. But if I
press Ctrl+Alt+F7 then the login screen (unity-greeter) comes up (and
the login sound plays).
