Running the following command from Terminal solved to problem for me.
Only hassle is that I have to log in every time with my pass and
username (for vpn): sudo openvpn --config file.ovpn
Be sure to find the correct folder where the relevant ovpn file is via
terminal, and then execute the before me
The only remaining black screen bug I know of for sure is bug 1536662.
But there may be others...

The behaviour has slightly changed but it seems clear to me that the same issue
is still at work.
At the prahical login, there is now a list of accounts to choose from, it does
include "daisy" but not "karel". There is however a "not listed" to click, and
that allows me to enter "karel" as login

I use terminus font in gnome-terminal. After upgrade to the latest
fonconfig in xenial my terminal font is blurry.
