Sorry for the delay — was only able to find time to reboot yesterday.
Daily live (from about a week ago) seems to help. I was able to change
display position, log out and log back again from the live usb (without
installation).

As expected xrandr crashes X too. I've seen what looks like a bunch of
these messages before login screen appeared:

using System Settings / Display (I had to press De
