The same problem with Ubuntu 14.04.3,
I restored network with:
:# ip link set dev eth0 up
:# ip addr add 192.168.x.z/24 dev eth0
:# ip route add default via 192.168.x.y dev eth0
:# echo nameserver 192.168.x.y >> /etc/resolve.conf
and then followed #8. Tricky issue indeed!
