Thanks for the advice but the position of the -s option had no effect:
$ LANG="C" apt-get dselect-upgrade -s
E: Command line option 's' [from -s] is not known.
The issue occures with and without sudo.

I tried the apt-offline version 1.5 (on a Xubuntu 14.04.1) but nothing
changed.

or froze the host system sometimes "loses" the keyboard. I must kill the VM or
RD to have keyboard again.
I experienced this issue with Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 and mainly Windows as VM
