Today the system got stuck during shutdown, showing a message of pending
update. However it was in fact stuck waiting for the NetworkManager to
respond.
A few times before I noticed the battery was completely discharged after
I had shut the system down. Now it seems the system stays on overnight

Now that the issue with kernel 6.8.0-45-generic is identified and
addressed, I can report the NetworkManager stoppages continue. At this
stage I am essentially unable to use Sleep mode. Every time the system
returns from Sleep mode either the NetworkManager is already frozen or
stops functioning wi
Yesterday the 6.8.0-45-generic kernel image got automatically installed
during the updates. Unfortunately the system fails to boot with that
image, which is now reported as [bug

Regarding the NetworkManager issue, it seems to be related to
Dear Philip, thank you for taking the time to look into this issue.
VirtualBox is an essential component of the course I am teaching this
period, I cannot remove it and am weary of tampering with it. It took me
over a week to get it working on Ubuntu 24.04, therefore I will wait for
this period to
Hi Danilo, my answers are below.
> Does any other command work?
Yes, I can work, as long as I don't need internet access.
> Do you see any zombie () process in "ps aux"?
`ps aux | grep defunct` returns empty.
> Does it hang forever? If you wait, let's say, 2 minutes, does it
unblock?
Yes it h
Neither `ip link show` nor `dmesg` produce any outputs when the
NetworkManager is unresponsive. Both commands hang up the command line.
I never seen `dmesg` behaving like this before.
I am attaching the output of `dmesg` obtained after rebooting the
system. Just in case that is useful.
Thank you.
Thank you Danilo and Paul for the swift follow up. The full
NetworkManager journal is attached. As for apport it fails with various
exceptions (see below). In my experience it is not really usuble when
the issue affects internet access.
Regards.

You should avoid fixing this issue by downgrading packages or re-
installing them manually. This answer explains how to connect to the
internet and upgrade the network_manager package with apt:

I am experiencing this bug with Nemo on Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit. It does not
start right away, it may take several hours working with Nemo before the
HUD goes crazy.
Even with 4 CPUs and 8 Gb of RAM, the hud-service renders the system
unusable once it forces the Swap to kick in.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 fully updated. If left installed,
mediascanner2.0 will at some point consume 100% of at least one core and
multiply the access time to any HDD by a factor of five or more. Here is
a thread from February at AskUbuntu:
