I have the same issue with intel driver. Once every few resumes, all gtk fonts
are garbbled. (strangely this doesn't happen to firefox for me).
Changing anti-aliasing settings in xfce4-appearance-settings fixes it, but
reverting back to the previous setting immediately restores the broken

I guess this bug is not only related with indicator-network. but also
with system-settings and more. I don't know.
I missed it too when first connecting the device to home's WLAN. Since I
usually don't turn on DHCP service, being unable to establish an static
IP configuration was an inconvenience,
I've experienced this behavior too. Reboot solves it for sure, but what
an inconvenient solution! :-P (I've not tested cycling airplane mode).
The last time, today, on BQ45 r25.
