Processor recognized but plays no sound when selected. External sound
devices are the only way to play sound on my computer.

Updates this morning fixed this. Now it would be great to be able to use

Pulseaudio does not work if booted normally; no soundcards are detected.
It cannot be killed or restarted.
If booted in recovery mode, it works as it should.

Update: booting in recovery mode solves the problem, but rebooting
normally causes the problem to happen again.
