Muon did not work.
sudo apt install libappstreamqt1/xenial-proposed did work after
following the EnableProposed on Xenial 16.04.2.

type:
aplay -l
Get the name after (device *:) and then pick the proper model from the
following link http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa
/HD-Audio-Models.txt and place it in model=

For reference. My modprobe file ended up like this:

Try to also add this to the modprobe file:

I had the exact same problem. I was able to fix it eventually after some
googling. Here is the fix:
In terminal type (lspci -nn | grep -i audio) you will get an output similar to
mine which I believe because of two conflicting devices (
