It looks like you have manually installed an Nvidia driver, and it's an
older version than ships with Ubuntu.
To install a driver that is supported and works for you please try:
1. Tap the Super (Windows) key.
2. Type: Software & Updates
3. Start 'Software & Updates'
4. Click on 'Addition

WTF. I was uninstalling the ubuntu-mate-desktop task with tasksel (while
ubuntu-desktop was still checked in the list), and it removed basically
everything. Afterwards all tasks in the tasksel list were unchecked.

Are you still using lightdm there? Ubuntu 19.10 uses GDM; only some
other flavors like MATE, Xubuntu and Lubuntu use lightdm.
