After some testing I've concluded that the BIOS update did have good effect -
the touchpad never stops working entirely now. Only the two way scrolling
feature stops which is still kind of annoying. It appears to happen after
suspend-mode being activated and resumed.

packages that are delivered by apt-get builddep. All the tests pass with
this, so I'd say there was something mis-configured in the VM I tried
this with previously.

I have similar problem.
I found workaround that usually allows me to shutdown system.
on debug-shell I run:
swapoff /dev/sda7
HDD start working and system poweroff few seconds later.
When system wasn't using swap before shutdown or i turn off swap before
shutdown it went off almost instantly.
