and the bug is still there. The system settings happily accept F1 as a
proper binding and it worked as expected.

Andy, I spotted the problem:
Line 120 in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions:
cp -a "$firmware" "$target_dir"
`cp -a` copies the symlink itself rather than the target it points to,
so we end up with a broken symlink in initramfs and no actual firmware
file.

FWIW, Firefox actually worked around this bug locally by making the bits
of firefox-UI in question able to paint the Theme's background gradient
(and we're making sure that any future release with GTK3 enabled will
include this patch). It may still be worth taking the theme patch that
I attached h
