Gibberbot is XMPP/instant messaging not SMS, but essentially works like
SMS through a service like Jabber, Gmail or Facebook.
SMS is not an IP based protocol, so running it over Tor doesn't make
much sense.

If a quality SMS app had security in mind, it probably wouldn't support

I think the model we use for Orbot (always running background service) doesn't
port well to the iOS model for multitasking/threading. I think that for the iOS
world, creating a TorBrowser app with everything in it makes the most sense.
There already numerous examples of third party browsers that

display of information that we can glean from Tor via the control port
interface.

This is a tricky issue in that what you are seeing is just the Orbot background
service loaded in memory, but without it actually doing any thing at all.
Android will always start the service on boot, but by deselecting the check box
for auto start, the Orbot service knows not to start the conne
I have been in touch with an Orbot user at a university somewhere in a
relatively free country in Asia, who just a week or so ago found that it
no longer worked for him. He was unable to connect to the Tor network
either directly or with bridges, and it seemed like SSL related errors
were occuring
