I have tried entering the following in torrc file:
MyFamily $(A401E765D8B24057C3D91109D3C3E8D9E4B8BEAE),
$(68F162C50F22205FB3B728ACE67470B17D7430D6)
(all on one line) with and without dollar signs, commas, spaces after
the comma, etc.

Just remove the parenthesis from that line and all should work fine.
Make it look like this:
