I never had any problems accessing any Apple website via tor at all. That
includes Software Updates, discussions, developer member area and forums,
iTunes Connect, etc. Everything works just fine over Tor.
It seems that discussions.apple.com blocking Tor is new.

explaining what Tor is in the hopes that they will at least consider unblocking
non-exit relays (probably won't happen but it's worth trying).

I don't know about that. The number of site that ban all Tor nodes (exits and
non-exits alike) is relatively low compared to the number of websites that
don't. The banning happens when trigger-happy sysadmins think that 1) IP
address == user, and
I found the same thing when I ran a middle relay on my home connection. Hulu
and Best Buy outright blocked me. I ended up having to switch to a bridge relay
and wait for my IP to change.

Don't run a relay from your own IP address. Pretty standard advice
