Try to set "security = share" in smb.conf.
And here is a nice online-book called "Using Samba", but you are allowed to buy
it certainly...

I am far form being a samba expert meanwhile did you
add any samba user
o smbpasswd -U [ unix user name] -a [SAMBA user name]
[password]
and then restart you server
o samba restart
it should works.
