Just some ideas, since I saw that kind of problems while playing with mod_php using ct_lib/mysql and mod_xslt and mod_gzip - Did httpd was linked against pthread ? When you use Apache with a some requiring libpthread YOU SHOULD REALLY rebuild apache with -lpthread - Also take a look
