After some observation, it appears this highly useful effect is observed when
using ssh. So the combination is actually when using ssh with qemu-kvm, and
not to do with tmux directly, I just happened to be using a tmux pane at the
time. Apologies for the unintended misdirection. FYI.

Belay that observation. While this used to happen, a short time later, now
the 'feature' doesn't happen any more. So there must have been something else
going on which I'm unaware of. Apologies for the false positive.
