I figured it out, I had installed libevent, not libevent-devel.
tmux is now compiled! the man pages do not work :
Manual entry for tmux not found or not installed.
Any suggestions?

I just installed libevent and still cannot find event.h
ls -al /usr/lib/libevent
libevent-1.4.alibevent.ali
endency line needs colon or double colon operator.

make: Equal sign not found in macro substitution.
