I have a different answer than Stephen. When pulseauudio is installed
Possibly because Pipewire works pretty well with pulseaudio

Here is a screenshot of pavucontrol on my laptop while running an app that uses
ALSA.
The app is listed in the Playback tab, while on my desktop the item isn't
listed and the app is silent.
