I don't think this user wants to get rid of gdm, as your method would do,
but instead just change her window manager (or get rid of gnome-session
is, I've not used gnome for a while, but I think it's the thingie that
starts gnome) and if xterm starts when user gets into the window manager.

locate to see where it is in y
