Actually, it should use the first resolution in the list, not necessarily
the smallest one. Unfortunately, Xconfigurator doesn't let you chose what
order they're written in the config file in. If you use xf86config, you
can choose the order in which they're listed - i.e. a larger one first,

Nope..I have had almost no chance to really get tweaking on this
box... so i haven't upgraded anything since i
installed the OS except netscape...and i did install staroffice, but haven't
had a chance to use it even one time..

What I've done in my many X installation nightmares (I seem to have a cursed
combination of video board and monitor) is this loop:
1. Start off in runlevel 3 (via telinit 3 or boot with id:3:initdefault in
/etc/in
