I have no idea about Cobalt web servers, but if this were a linux box I
would think there may be a problem starting a shell. I'm assuming there is
one because it uses ssh/telnet. If it is racked at an ISP, do they have
support that you can call who will hook up a console (or look at the LCD

I've actually heard that Solaris' StarOffice for Linux works quite well.

Does it say anything in the messages files? (on Solaris it's
/var/adm/messages).

Solaris has a utility called /usr/sbin/dhcpconfig. I've never used it, but
it may be worth trying out.
Also, when doing ANY Solaris-related stuff, I strongly recommend
bookmarking the sunmanagers mailing list search page:

This is an excellent list. Just
Strace was a good idea, but didn't give any more information in this
case. It only said "permission denied." and no EPERM errors.
However, I made /var/qmail/man world readable, ran `man `, and
index.bt was created. This let me see that index.bt is created by 'man',

Anyone seen this before? Man pages will still display, but I get this
error:
man: can't create index cache /var/qmail/man/index.bt: Permission denied
I've checked permissions on /var, /var/qmail, and /var/qmail/man, and they
all the same as another system where this error doesn't happen. I can a
A couple of things,
First, Do you want to be ssh'ing to the ftp port (21)?
Secondly, authorized_keys is used for allowing one machine to ssh into
another machine without using a password. You should still be able to
connect without populating the authorized_keys file with the identity.pub
key
That's exactly how I figured it out. It used to always confuse me until I
realized that (as long as the new directory is named the same as the old),
you can just do # ln -s filename. Cool.

Pcnfsd is administered by the portmapper. Check your /etc/rpc file to see
if it is in there and uncommented. Also check that portmap is running.

Just be careful of what sudo access you give. For example, do not give
sudo access to perl or vi because they can become excellent hacking tools.

Rachel,
I found some other interesting information about debian-kde here
http://www.tdyc.com/archive/debian-tutorial/develop.html.
It says "KDE 2.x is now a part of woody but since woody is considered

The only thing I know about apt-get is that it's a wrapper for
dselect. I'd suggest using dselect, as it may give you more control
(a.k.a. more explicit error messages) over installs. dselect is a little
confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it...
In any case, here's a quick tutorial:
Here's a good article talking about that.

Does anyone know how many different Linux distributions are out there

I don't think Partition Magic is free. The home page has a 'demo' which
shows you what it would do without actually doing it. Has anyone found a
(legal) download of PM?

The best System Administration book I've ever come across is O'Reilly's
Essential System Administration by AEleen Frisch. I've yet to find a
decent Sys Admin. book for Solaris, though. Any suggestions?
