Alternatively you can simply telnet or ssh into your shell account
and use mutt, elm or some other mail package.

You can try SLiRP. It is a PPP emulator. Find out if the system has it
installed. Otherwise I think one can have a user-only copy. You would have
to consult the administrator of the host for that. With SLiRP you can run
almost all GUI applications from your system at home.
