that's what i usually do, but i'd like to be somewhere away from my computer
and download a book from bookshare.

Did you say you could open the files on your PC in Word or IE? If so,
you could probably save them as text files and then move those text
files over to your cell phone to read with a book reader or text
browser/editor. I know it's not very elegant, but just a thought.
