What do you think about adding another class to the train stations to
distinct them from subway stations? I suggest to add
railway=subway_station for the latter and keep railway=station for
train stations. It is mostly deductable from the railway tracks (or
route relations if any) if it is a train
If it's public_transport=subway, IMHO there should be a station=yes as a

I think we'll need a better definition of subway. I believe in England
that's a below-highway pedestrian tunnel.
More seriously, in Boston we sometimes use the word "subway" to refer to
several MBTA lines, and non-train-nerds don't really distinguish between

If it's on a metro (subway) line it's a subway_station, else if it's on a

I suggested before to make subway into public_transport, so in this case it
simply will be an unique area with both railway=* and public_transport=*

The discussion seems to have died for now, but the wiki doesn't
still give any readers concrete advice on what is the best
practice. Before I edit it once again, I'll try to summmarize
the points laid out so far, and (the first) one that didn't get
mentioned, at least this straight:

How does this sound for a compromise?
Many ways are not tagged with the total number of lanes at all points,
but only with the number of through lanes. Therefore, end users should
treat the lanes tag as a minimum rather than an exact number. Subtags
