Ah, excellent - usingg++ `pkg-config --cflags sword`
ciphercng.cpp`pkg-config --libs sword`solved it.
Changing the file /usr/lib/pkgconfig/sword.pc as noted at
https://launchpad.net/edgy-backports/+bug/65451 was also necessary.
