I wanted to provide an update to the mailing list as this bug appears
to be getting more interesting.
There's one other confirmed case of a different Thinkpad T400 with
this same issue, and kern.smp.disabled=1 allowing it to boot.
There's also a completely different piece of hardware, a Jing

Hi stable subscribers,
I recently updated from 14.1-RELEASE to 14.2-RELEASE on my Thinkpad
T400. It now hangs on boot (after fsck). It even hangs in single
user mode.
The 14.2-RELEASE installer does the same. 14.1-RELEASE works just
fine.
