5.4.
Everything below 5.5 (like your 5.3) should work as expected.

It's all working. Thanks for your help. Apparently there is an issue with
php 5.6. When I got rid of it and installed php 5.4 it worked instantly.

I have installed the php-mysql module. It is currently 5.6.3-3. I'll try
uninstalling it and using a lower version.
