That's exactly what Jonatas is describing. Projects can add GitHub
Sponsors on their profile, using SPI as fiscal sponsor. Donors will
give to the projects. The money will go to SPI, with a note that it's
for the project.

Yes, of course ─ the projects need to follow the instructions in the first
link to configure their own GitHub repositories to collect donations via
SPI.
The setup guide is pretty intuitive, but we are available if there are
questions; from projects or from donors alike.

that's great news!
I'd suggest to also allow sponsoring individual projects instead of SPI (if
possible). I believe some sponsors would like to sponsor a project specifically
- the same way as it is by using https://www.spi-inc.org/projects/ .
