Found the solution to my particular problem. It was two-fold.
First was to get amavisd chrooted by the most direct method.
that was accomplished by:
# mkdir -p /var/amavisd/var
# ln -s / /var/amavisd/var/amavisd
Then some proof-reading of my config files located the 2nd error in
/etc/mail/spamas
